Hon. Maritza Fugaro-Norton

Judge Fugaro-Norton is a Town Justice in the Town of Cortlandt, New York.  She is also an Associate Court Attorney for a Westchester County Family Court Judge.  Judge Fugaro-Norton earned a law degree from Pace University School of Law in 2003 and obtained her undergraduate degree from Manhattan College in 2000.    She was admitted to practice law in the Second Judicial Department in 2004.  Her legal career began at the Pace Women’s Justice Center where she represented victims of domestic violence and litigated all family law matters on their behalf.  Thereafter, Mrs. Fugaro-Norton worked for a private law firm in Yonkers, New York and handled a wide variety of cases including Matrimonial and Family Law, Criminal Law, Bankruptcy Law, Personal Injury Litigation and Real Estate transactions.  Judge Fugaro-Norton is admitted to practice before the Courts in the State of New York, and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.  

Judge Fugaro-Norton was born and raised in Yonkers, New York.  She now resides in Cortlandt Manor, New York with her husband, Michael Norton and their three children, Gisela, Larena and Landon.  After a hard-fought campaign against a long-term incumbent, she was elected to the position of Cortlandt Town Justice in 2019 and began her four-year term in 2020.  Judge Fugaro-Norton is the first elected Latino official in the Town of Cortlandt and one of only 10 Latino judges in Westchester County.  As Town Justice she conducts court sessions and hears criminal and civil cases.  Her duties include holding arraignments, issuing warrants of arrest, sentencing criminals, imposing fines, instructing juries, rendering decisions in non-jury cases, and supervising the administrative duties of the courts’ clerical staff. 

Judge Fugaro-Norton is active in her community having served as a district leader for seven years as well as being involved in the school community having maintained the position as Secretary of the Vancortlandtville Elementary School PTA for four years.  She was a competitive figure skater and remains involved in the sport by teaching others to learn to skate.
