Justice Wilma Guzman was born and raised in the borough of The Bronx. She obtained a Bachelors degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, while simultaneously raising two daughters and working full time. After graduation, she worked as an investigator in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office assigned to the Sex Crimes Unit, where she investigated sex crime cases and major offense cases.

In 1982, Justice Guzman began her legal studies at St. John’s University School of Law, working full time while attending law school in the evenings. She received her law degree in 1986. She was admitted to the practice of law in the States of New York and New Jersey. She began her legal career in a Bronx law firm in the practice of criminal law and civil litigation. Justice Guzman was formerly employed as a trial attorney with a prestigious Manhattan negligence law firm where she developed a skill and passion for trials. She is a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, an association of trials attorneys throughout the United States who have achieved a verdict of one Million Dollars or more.

In 1998 Justice Guzman was elected to a Citywide position as a Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York. In May of 2005, Justice Guzman was appointed Acting Supreme Court Justice in Bronx County, Civil Division. In November, 2005 Justice Guzman was elected Supreme Court Justice in the Twelfth Judicial District where she has presided both in the Criminal and Civil Divisions of the Supreme Court. She presently serves on the Gender Fairness Committee for the Twelfth Judicial District.

Justice Guzman is an Adjunct Professor Pace University and CUNY. She also serves as a mentor for the St. John’s University School of Law Judicial Internship Program, Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program and John Jay College of Criminal Justice Pre-Law Internship Program. She also volunteers as a Judge for the Thurgood Marshall Junior Mock Trial Program.

Justice Guzman is a current Board Member of the Latino Judge Association, Inc. and the Puerto Rican Bar Association, Inc. Justice Guzman is a Past President of the Latino Judges Association, Inc., Supreme Court Justices Association of the City of New York and the Puerto Rico Bar Association, Inc.

Justice Guzman has received recognition for her work and dedication from the National Association of Professional Women; United States Coast Guard; John Jay College of Criminal Justice; Puerto Rican Bar Association, Inc., New York State Hispanic Court Officers Society, The Cervantes Society, Latina 50 Plus 2018 Law Award, among others.

Justice Guzman is the proud parent of three daughters, Michelle, Lisa and Norvyee and a son, Nicholas and five grandchildren.
